Where do I even begin this big guy?! The other day, Loki was laying on me while I wasn’t feeling too great, and it had me reminiscing on my time together with him so far. Here’s just a look back on Loki’s story thus far and why I will always promote rescuing and adopting all animals!
Loki was actually an unwanted gift to me from a previous boyfriend. I had gone away for the weekend with my parents, and came home to find this 2 month old kitten in my kitchen. I had Sadie (my dog) at the time, and was first worried about that, but also was really not interested in having a cat right then. I grew up with adopting cats when I was little, and I love them, it just wasn’t the time I thought about having another one. BUT reluctantly, the cat stayed.
Thankfully, he was smart enough to rescue him from a local shelter (which I was all for). I was really happy he did that because he came from a family that bought previous animals from breeders. A lot of people will have negative thoughts about shelter or rescue pets — they are ‘mutts’, they can be mean, something is wrong with them, etc. Yes it may be a harder transition for them at first, and with Loki it wasn’t any different. We had to get him acclimated to the apartment, to the dog, and to us. But what was awesome was seeing his behavior change over time by just showing him love and patience.
He warmed up to the dog right away - it was the cutest thing ever! He became this somewhat protective kitten to this snuggly, lovable big boy. He wanted to lay on your belly and have you pet him after a while. He got very social and until this day is always talking. He truly started to bond with us.
When Sadie passed away, this hit Loki hard, and it was devastating to see. To me, this just goes to show you that your animals grieve too when something bad happens. He cried at the front door, he wouldn’t eat for a while….heartbreaking. But during that time, he got even more loving to me. He wanted to be wherever I was. He has always wanted to be a part of the family - and he always will be.
I honestly couldn’t imagine a life without this guy, and we are going on 9 years together! For anybody that is on the fence on adopting or rescuing a cat/kitten from a shelter, all I would say to them is: Loki. Do yourself a favor and look into it. These cats and kittens want and need love more than you know, and if you give it to them the right way, they will be forever grateful for it!.
